Are any benchmarks for the ATI HD 4850 available, yet?
Is it a whole lot better than the Geforce 8800GT and also worth the price?

It's better than the 9800GTX, especially with AA on (anti aliasing). The 9800GTX if you remember was in the neighbourhood of $300 prior to this puppies launch, so for the price of $199 and under I'd say its a damn good buy. If you can afford it, get it. I do think this is the "new" 8800GT (ie: the new midrange card to get).
The 8800GT is still very good and quite a bit cheaper at some places. It really depends on how much you want to spend and how much performance you want. As the performance increases, prices start to rise dramatically. The higher up you go the more insane the prices become
