Can I place a PCI video card on a supermicro X5DA8?
I'm a happy customer of a X5DA8 motherboard for my home use.
I currently have a NVIDIA fx 5700 GeForce Video card with 256mb of memory that I would like to upgrade.
The problem is that there are fewer and fewer AGP slot video cards on the market and the one I usually find are only 512mg of memory.I do understand that I can not place a PCI card on a AGP Slot.My question is "Can I place a PCI Video Card in one of the PCI empty slot and get it to work properly? If yes, what type of PCI would work on this?I'm not an expert, so I need all the help I can get before I buy one, I want at least 1Gig of memory to upgrade to.Can you suggest any?
You can get a PCI graphics card, but even with 1GB of RAM it would run slower than an AGP graphics card. The PCI bridge is limited to a maximum data throughput of 133 MB/s*. The AGP 8x port on your X5DA8 has a maximum throughput of 2133 MB/s**.
AGP video cards may be harder to find these days, but they are still your best option. The ATI Radeon HD 3850 is a great card and is available for the AGP 8x slot. Here is a link to a site selling this type of card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102730
I'm including a link in sources to a website that reviews computer hardware***. They release a list each month of the best graphics card for your money. It includes a list of AGP cards. It lists the HD 3850 as a best in class graphics card.
Good luck!
